Good morning people, I hope that you are all bundled up.
It’s ridiculously cold here this morning. The morning news says that the regular temperature for March 2 should be 2 degrees Celsius. The actual temperature this morning… -15 degrees Celsius, and when you factor in the wind chill, it was a frigid -26. I don’t like it one bit. I don’t mind the cold when it’s supposed to be cold. But it’s not supposed to be this cold now. We were supposed to be past all of that.
In other weather news, if you happen to be headed to Montreal this weekend you will find the temperature near 1 degree, but there’s a strong chance that 15-25 cm of snow may fall from Friday to Sunday.
In fantastic, amazing, medical news Canadian researchers at Mt. Sinai have found a safe way to turn skin cells into stem cells. This is huge news people. This has amazing potential to save lives, to cure incurable diseases and to put minds at ease for a long long long time. I like it. It makes me happy. And it makes me proud that the fine people that have figured this out are Canadian.
In heart-filling, eye-tearing kind of news, a Milwaukee high school basketball team has shown everyone what true sportsmanship is. Senior Johntell Franklin lost his mother to a battle with cancer on February 7th, but decided that he wanted to play in that night’s basketball game. The only problem was that coach Womack didn’t add his name on the scorecard because he didn’t expect to see him in the gym, let alone on the bench. When Franklin showed up in the 2nd quarter ready to play the rules stated that coach Womack would have to be given a technical foul to enter Franklin into the game. He gladly agreed. What happened next is amazing. Coach Rohlman of DeKalb High looked at his team and asked who wanted to take the free-throws, his senior point guard raised his hand. Rohlman looked at his guard and asked if he understood he would be missing the shots. His guard nodded and then bounced the ball from the free throw line and let it roll to the referee twice. Coach Womack was so moved and impressed by the actions of the coach and the team that he wrote a letter to the DeKalb newspaper to express his feelings. This may be the most fantastic thing I’ve read in sports in a long long time. Bravo to everyone involved on both sides of the floor. Bravo to ESPN.com for running the article as well. Far too often these days the sports stories are bad news. This fills my heart. Link to full story in today’s section.
